A recap on this year's Math Week by John Garrett

Mentarians celebrate again, as the annual ‘Math Week’ has commenced for the nth time this June. It’s a week full of adventure and excitement as students are given the opportunity to explore all that math has to offer. Most of us can agree that math is not what we get high on -- we often see art enthusiasts and music enthusiasts but rarely any math enthusiasts, and that’s because we see math as a subject that has nothing going for it but numbers. However, as Math Week has proven, we are gladly mistaken.

The math department along with other teachers and staff were able to come up with such a program that brought math to life. When we were called back to school just before our summer break, I can assure you that most of us were not looking forward to coming back as we perceived It as unnecessary, but there was such a high turnout of students coming back to school as they realized Mentari’s annual “Math Week” would take place then and there.

In a span of a week, the math department was able to fit in a list of activities that students would be able to enjoy both individually and as a class. Beginning with the Math Bee, several students were chosen from each homeroom class and would entertain math themed questions based on grade level. In the Math Bee, students would compete against one another and eventually a winner is chosen (it’s Mentari’s own Game of Thrones with a twist). Aside from that, the Class Math Competition encompassed the same idea as the individual math competition, but instead classes would compete against one another to find a class fit for the prestigious title of 1st place this year. It brought out the best from all students, as they had to work rationally and set aside all their common differences.

This year, a math game was also introduced welcoming all students to participate. A simple yet innovative game, students were given a jar filled with candy and had to calculate for the amount of candy in the jar without opening the jar. Students had to think of ways to calculate the amount of candy present in the jar through use of mathematical theorem.

To top it all off, ‘Math Week’ also hosted a spirit day where students would wear clothes associated with mathematical terms, and to put it simply, it really did bring everyone’s spirits to the positive. And although math week is over, we’ve learned and gained so much that I’m sure we can’t for next years ‘Math Week’. Rock on Mentari Mathletes!
