What’s up, readers?

How’s school going? How are all the assignments, the homework, and the projects? You’re done? Great! Still trying to finish? Keep going! I would just like to say that you have done a great job for working hard and to do your best—so well done! After all the work that you’ve done, you guys deserve a pat in the back and a break.

Now, what to do during your break? I’d recommend you to read some books. It’s a great way to spend your free time—it’s takes you to a whole new different world, offers you more knowledge, and it could even allow you to forget of all your burdens. If you don’t know what to read (or perhaps now you are asking around for recommendations), I have something that you might like: a novel called Mortal Engines.

Mortal Engines is written by Philip Reeve, and published back in 2001 by Scholastic in the UK. It’s a science fiction, revolving around cities moving on wheels that are all trying to gobble each other in order to keep moving. If that’s not enough there’s an abundance of airships, an ancient super weapon, resurrected people, and more.

Without spoiling much of the story, here’s how it goes: the story takes place thousands of years in the future during the fictional “Traction Era”, where all cities are moving on wheels and hunt each other on the Hunting Grounds. The bigger city eats the smaller cities, and the smaller cities are always on the run.

Tom Natsworthy is a teenage boy living in London who works as a Third Class Apprentice Historian. He looks up to a man named Thaddeus Valentine, London’s Head Historian who Tom calls his hero. On an important note, Tom is somewhat infatuated with his daughter Katherine. When London captured a small mining city named Salthook, they went to see it—only to encounter a girl named Hester Shaw who attempted to kill Valentine. She fails and runs away, but Tom runs after her and they both fall into a waste chute and find themselves on the Hunting Grounds. Soon, Tom learns why Hester hates Valentine so much, and they try to make their way back to London. During their journey, they encounter newfound enemies and a Stalker who’s trying to kill Hester. Meanwhile in London, Katherine is trying to uncover a secret which her father keeps from her.

This book is that type of book that keeps you up at night because you need to “read one more chapter’”. You can’t wait to see what happens next, because it’s packed with action. That said, it may be quite violent on some parts, so if you’re not fond of gore, you might not want to read those parts.

Aside from that, this book is amazing. Philip Reeve is an amazing author, and he writes his books in a way that would make the readers feel like they are watching a movie. It’s all in the flow which his story goes, the way he describes the scenes, what’s going to happen next—you’ll get what I mean once you’ve started reading.

Mortal Engines is one of the best books that I have read, and is totally on my favorite list. Why not give it a try? Maybe you guys would like it too! Until then, I’ll see you guys next time.
